‘Waterwatch South East delivers Environmental Education Forums’
In a first for the South East, Waterwatch SE, Landcare, PIRSA Forestry and Blue Lake Watercare have joined forces to assist schools integrate environmental education into their school curriculum.
Over 60% of the region’s schools were represented at Environmental Education (EE) forums held in March, one in Mt Gambier and the other in Naracoorte.
The objectives of the forums were to gather information on,
• South East Schools current Environmental Education (EE) practises,
• To identify barriers that teachers are facing in delivering EE,
• Identify support teachers require to deliver regionally specific EE.
As follow-on to the teachers forums, a forum was run in May 2007 for agencies and community members to discuss how they could work together as a region to assist schools with environmental education.
The outcome from the forums has been the formation of a SE Environmental Education Working group (SEEEWG), comprising local service providers and 10 teacher representatives. This group are working together to support schools with Environmental Education through a calendar of events, involving teacher training and development evenings and catchment tours, the creation of a SE Environmental Education contact list and the future development of Environmental Youth groups for students to have their say on local environmental issues.
