Weed Warriors

What is Weed Warriors?

Weed Warriors is an innovative national education and awareness program supported by the CRC for Australian Weed Management aimed at fostering increased community awareness of and involvement in local weed issues.

The Weed Warriors program recognises children as the land managers of the very near future and aims to empower and engage them in weed issues through an on-going program of classroom and field based activities. Weed Warriors is designed to challenge students to take them beyond knowledge to action and to
instil in them a sense of connection to and responsibility for their natural surroundings that is critical for bringing about lasting change.

What is involved?

The Weed Warriors program generally lasts 4-6 weeks during term 3 and can be tailored to a wide range of year levels from 3 to 12. Throughout this time program participants are taught the skills needed to breed the biological control agents through the provision of resource material and through active participation in the process. Students then release their agents at a weed infestation localised to the school, helping to make a valuable contribution to the stewardship of local places.

Schools who have involved in the weed warriors program in the south east are:

• Beachport Primary School
• Coonalpyn Area School
• Kangaroo Inn Area School
• Kingston Community School
• Mulga Street Primary School
• Naracoorte High School
• Naracoorte South Primary School
• Salt Creek Area School
• Tintinara Area School
