At present the SE NRM Board's activities are governed by the Board's Initial NRM Plan which came into being after the adoption of the Natural Resources Management Act 2004 (the NRM Act). This plan enabled the 15 bodies which had integrated to form the SE NRM Board, to continue to operate under a region-wide strategic direction for NRM management.
The NRM Act requires that the Board undertakes an annual review of the business component of its NRM Plan and a five yearly review of the strategic plan. As part of this review process the Board has undertaken an assessment of its income, expenditure and staffing requirements for the implementation of the Initial NRM Plan in 2008-09. The outcome of the review is a detailed work program and the levy quantum needed to deliver it.
The NRM levy enables the Board to more effectively provide an extensive and balanced program for the benefit of the region’s natural resources. Monies raised by the SE NRM Board are strategically invested across the region to implement a range of works, programs and initiatives to enhance the condition of our precious natural resources. To make it possible for the Board to deliver the 2008-09 work program a levy of $2.48 per megalitre for water and an average $35.79 per rateable assessment for land will be implemented. This equates to an increase of 9 cents per megalitre for water-based levies and $1.29 per rateable assessment for land-based levies.
Community Input
The Board is always keen to work with the community and stakeholders in identifying unique NRM issues and innovative solutions to localised NRM issues. The Board recognises the value of community and industry input and is keen to utilise existing knowledge and skills.
“Turning on a tap is a natural resources management activity - every one has a responsibility to ensure efficiency and invest in improving our current techniques and strategies.”
- Mr Hugo Hopton - General Manager
