What is a Land and Water Management Plan?
In South Australia, Land and Water Management Plans are not required by legislation. They can be community or property level plans which set out the sustainable management of natural resources. They incorporate practical property or community management of infrastructure, farming and irrigation practices, and appropriate natural resource efficiencies and plans for environmental monitoring. They can also provide a bench-mark for continuous improvement. Most importantly they demonstrate the willingness of the community or landholder to work towards minimizing impact on natural resources through proper planning processes.
Why do we need Land and Water Management Plans?
These plans are important as they provide clear direction for the management of unique properties or communities. They demonstrate the ability to manage natural resources with minimal detrimental affect. Wide spread consultation with stakeholders can lead to the development of creative and innovative methods of improving current conditions and practices. A Land and Water Management Plan should create considered direction for improved management of land and water which will fit within local and regional existing natural resource management.
