Construction of dams
Before applying for dam construction, enlargement or modification please check if you require either a WAA permit or a development authorisation for one of these activities.
Please read the following information to determine which authorisation you require:
-
dam construction, enlargement or modifications to a volume of 5 ML (5,000 kilolitres) or less, and/or with walls of 3 metres or less above the natural ground surface can only be undertaken with a WAA permit. Apply through the Board.
-
dam construction, enlargement or modifications of a volume greater than 5 ML (5,000 kilolitres), and/or with walls greater than 3 metres above the natural ground surface can only be undertaken with development approval. Apply through your Local Council.
Please note if development approval is granted, a WAA permit is not required (s129 of the NRM Act). The Council is required to refer the development application to the Board for direction. The SE NRM Board will provide direction consistent with the principles outlined in the South East Regional Natural Resources Management Plan - Part 4: NRM Policy.
